Medical Mysteries Investigator
Deadline: January 24th, 23.59 by UK time.

BENEFITS TO YOU
ROLE DESCRIPTION
We are hiring a full or part-time researcher to solve several mysterious medical problems for high impact effective altruists. These are issues that have already been investigated by consulting with multiple doctors and tests with no clear answers or solutions. Your job would be to initially investigate into these issues of two EAs at Nonlinear, after which there is an option to scale this service to more high impact EAs.
You'll be expected to think creatively and independently. You will be in charge of reading health related research, contacting experts and if possible, analyzing existing data. The end goal is to find a suitable diagnosis as well as workable solutions to various complex health issues.
The work load is minimum 10 hours/week, 20+ is preferred. Medical background is preferred but not necessary - just need a diligent researcher with strong epistemics.
THE CASE FOR IMPACT
If what you care about is people being helped, freeing up their time to do more direct work can be a very high leverage position. For example, say there is a person who does work that you consider to be very useful for the world. Often these people are limited in the time they can dedicate to the cause because of other things in their lives. If you spend one hour of your time researching solutions for increasing their health instead of them, causing them to work another hour, you have in essence converted your time into their time. This can be a huge multiplying factor on your own impact. You can see more about the rationale here on 80,000 Hours.

BENEFITS TO YOU
- Remote & Flexible hours. This position can be done remotely according to your own schedule.
- High impact. Some high impact EAs have health issues causing >20% reduced productivity. We think some of these issues are solvable, but require deep research that few health professionals are willing to do. For example, if a top EA is losing 30% of their productivity to a health issue and you solved it, it’d be like “creating” 30 new EAs.
- EA experience. Get experience working for an EA nonprofit, which will help help launch your career in the EA space.
- Pay: $20-30 an hour, depending on experience.
